The rise of technology has increased the time spent on electronics, specifically in teenagers. They have grown accustom to extended use of technology and are paying the price.

What It Impacts

Using technology shortly before going to sleep prolongs brain activity and therefore decreases quantity of sleep. This shortens the REM cycle as well as throwing off the circadian rhythm, which is detrimental to sleep quality.

Why It Matters

Some of the most pivotal years for physical and emotional health and growth is during teenage years. There can be any number of reasons that prohibits the full growth of each of these, but sleep quality is one of the biggest  It is important that today's teenagers understand that their futures are in jeopardy because many are not currently getting adequate sleep. 

In my experience as a teenager, my sleep schedule is all over the place. Going to bed at different times depending on the day of the week and using technology shortly before sleep have disrupted my natural sleep cycle and taken away quality sleep. Sleep is one of the most important aspects of health, and I wanted to know what caused a lack of quality sleep. I know many other teenagers are experiencing similar situations, so it is important to acknowledge that our health is at risk. 

I aim to inform teenagers about the extent to which technology is impacting their sleep quality and provide a solution to optimize sleep quality without completely taking away technology.
